Monday

Cole McDonald has arrived!!

Cole (full name Ryan Cole) McDonald was born at 7:43 AM on 6/23. He weighed 6 pounds, 10 oz and was 18 inches long. Shulana says he doesn't have much hair but what he does have is strawberry blonde. Everyone is doing well.

Sorry - no update!

For the few of you that actually visit this site, I need to apologize for the lack of updated content. I have been out of class for the past three weeks (nursery duty, vacation, and taking Jeff to the airport), so I am out of the loop!!

I will update what I can this week and then hopefully get things back on track after class on Sunday.

Our very own Matt McClellan celebrated his third aniversary at 2BC this past Sunday. Take a minute and thank Matt for his awesome service to our church!!

Our class has 'adopted' one of the nursery rooms to assist with during the 8:30 service. This is the same room we've been helping in for over a year. I am trying to fill a 3 month rotation schedule so that no one has to miss too many classes. I currently have 10 people signed up, but I need five more to get us through August. I know that summer schedules are busy, but if you think you can spare a Sunday morning, please let me know and I'll get you in a slot. THANK YOU to those that have already volunteered!

Sunday night Selah has begun. No Sunday evening services/activities beginning 5/25 and ending 7/6.

Only two services (8:30 and 11:00) throughout the summer. Three services will resume 8/24.

Assistants are still needed for May and June in the children's ministry. Sign-up sheet is still being passed around in class. This is not our normal nursery rotation - this is a special one-time sign-up that is being passed around by the children's department. (Sorry - I don't have the schedule for this so I can't remind you or post it.)

VBS is July 7-11. If you would like to help, there are still plenty of spots that need to be filled. I would love it if someone would help me in my 3rd grade class (I've never helped with VBS before and I'm scheduled to lead a class and have no one to help me!). Please let me or Jill know if you would be willing to help out.

Current Series

We are currently studying the book of James using the Life Lessons study guide by Max Lucado.

The book of James was written by James, the oldest half-brother of Jesus. James was an early influential church leader focused on reaching lost Jews.

James was one of the first books written in the New Testament, around 49 AD. It is a How-To book on Christian living, sometimes referred to as the Proverbs of the New Testament for its practical application.

This book is very non-hypocritical, very hard-hitting, and very straight-forward. It was written to the persecuted Jews who left Jerusalem and were living among the Gentiles.

Sum it up: LIVE YOUR FAITH - DON'T BE HYPOCRITES!!

Next Sunday

The next lesson in our study of James is about Sowing Seeds of Peace. The text will be James 3:13-18.

Notes from Sunday (5/25)

This Sunday we talked about Taming the Tongue. Our text was James 3:1-12.

We discussed how a pinch of salt, a pebble in a shoe, and a nail in a tire are all small items that can have large consequences. The tongue is the same way - small part of the body, but can cause major problems.

Max Lucado compares a person's tongue to a horse's bit and a ship's rudder. All three direct the path of their larger beings.

The tongue can be used for evil or for good. It can detract from God's glory or it can bring glory to God. What power the tongue has!!

You can use your tongue today to tear people down (sharp words, gossip, etc.) or you can use it to build people up (praise a job well done, give encouragement, etc.).

Which will you choose?

(Thank you, Ryan, for leading the lesson!)

Notes from Sunday (4/27)

Principle #7

Tithing is a metter of stewardship for God.
  • What is the most generous thing anyone has ever done for you?
  • How did their generosity make you feel?
  • How does your generosity make you feel?

2 Corinthians 9

  • We are to give/tithe out of a humble and loving heart. (vs. 5-7)
  • We reap in proportion to what we sow. (v. 6)
  • We are to individually decide what to give. (v. 7) But a 10% was their starting place. And a tithe is a minimum or starting place for New Testament Christians.
  • God still rewards those who give. (vs. 9-11)

Principle #8

Giving should be a result of our relationship with God and not a way to earn His favor. (We aren't buying God's love!)

The motivation behind generosity is sincere thankfulness.

What happens when we give to God first and cheerfully?

  1. Our hearts are drawn closer to the heart of Christ. (Matthew 6:21)
  2. We develop character.
  3. We invest in eternity. (Matthew 6:20)
  4. We are blessed. (Acts 20:35, Proverbs 11:24-25)

NOTE: For the month of April, we will be studying Stewardship to go along with the Journey of Faith sermons.

We are currently studying the book of James.

Next Sunday

Next Sunday we will begin a church-wide study on Stewardship to go along with Bro. Mark's Journey of Faith series.

We will pick back up with our study of James on May 4th.

Notes from Sunday (3/16)

This week we discussed temptation. The scripture we studied was James 1:12-18.

Temptation is an enticement to do something wrong. Temptation itself is not a sin. (Jesus was tempted, but He never sinned!!)

Speaking of Jesus being tempted, how did He handle temptation?
1. Scripture!
2. He knew his enemy!

v. 13 - Temptation comes from within. Temptation becomes desire, desire becomes sin, and sin ultimately becomes death.

Sources of Temptation:
Satan (Matt 4:1)
Within (Matt 18:7-8)
Friends (Mark 9:42)
Following the crowd (Matt 7:13-14)
Pride in ourselves (Gal 6:1)
Persecution (1 Thes 3:4-5)
Riches (1 Tim 6:9-10)

So, how do we deal with temptation?

1. Scripture
2. Prayer (Matt 26:41)
3. Avoidance
4. Christian friends
5. Remember - GOD IS WITH YOU!!! (1 Cor 10:13)
6. Be alert! Recognize temptation for what it is and know it is coming. (1 Pet 5:8)

Finally, remember to count your blessings!! Some of the blessings we discussed were people in our lives (kids, spouse, parents, good Christian friends), financial blessings, employment, our country, and our right/ability to attend church.
